Experience glamping refined in this professionally designed cabin that pays homage to the tents of a Viking encampment. Our stunning open concept means nature is never far away. The cabin, Rosa, is in a secluded spot a few feet from the over 24 thousand square kilometres of beautiful Lake Winnipeg in the summer, and on the lake in the winter.
In 1875, 235 Icelandic descendants of Vikings headed north from Winnipeg, Manitoba, down the Red River to Lake Winnipeg’s west shore. These travellers were promised an Icelandic reserve, which became New Iceland. In 1881, provincial borders extended north, and New Iceland, which was originally in the Northwest Territories, became part of Manitoba, with its original settlement destination being Gimli. Eventually, Icelandic settlers spread out across the province, and Balaton Beach - where Rosa calls home - is a 30-minute drive north of Gimli, a 10-minute drive south-east from Riverton, on the south-west tail of Lake Winnipeg, living with all that history.
Being totally off-grid we have a very comfortable private restroom with a compost toilet, forced-air propane-powered heater with thermostat, 4.5 cubic foot fridge with freezer, Weber grill, and an outdoor sink. Powered by solar panels and battery, we aim to minimize or environmental footprint.
From the couch you can see the lake from 3 sides of the cabin as there are more than 10 large windows. Baltic Birch walls from Russia ply the 20-foot high A-frame to the open peak. The super cozy queen bed is on the main floor.
Park then walk about 400 feet through a field to get to the cabin. We have a wagon to help carry your gear if needed.
Potable water is provided in 5 gallon water containers that can be used for drinking, washing, and coffee. We provide the propane for appliances and the BBQ , lake-friendly soaps and all the firewood you need is included. At the end of your stay we remove all waste in an environmentally sustainable manner.
Note: No pets allowed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Rosa - Modern Viking Cabin, luxurious, secluded, off-grid

Mark’s place was perfect for our family weekend away!! He is very thoughtful and reached out to make sure we had everything we needed, his mom even dropped off a tray of Icelandic goodies!! Our girls will never forget staying there, it is so unique. Our older daughter(14)loved the loft!! Glamping at its finest...all the comforts of home in the perfect spot right on the beach!! The water was great for swimming, bring water shoes though as there are rocks on the beach and in the water. Thanks for sharing your space with us!!

It’s a great back country experience, off the grid. It’s camping with the convenience of a cabin and a hot shower. Right beside the lakeshore as well and it’s set away from town but close enough to run for essentials. Our host was great!

Mark and Julie were excellent hosts! They were super welcoming, had great communication and were very knowledgeable. The architecture of this cabin was so well thought out and makes for a delightful and unique experience. The compostable toilet and outdoor shower are unique and much better than we expected. The views of the lake through a variety of windows, listening to the waves and waking up right on the water for morning coffee was our favourite. We highly recommend bringing water shoes/sandals because of the amount of zebra mussels and rocks on the beaches. We really liked going for walks on Sandy Bar Beach (just a short drive North) and we also discovered that Hnausa Provincial Park would maybe be a better location to go for a swim (less rocky). We absolutely loved our stay at the Modern Viking!

We commend Mark on his efforts to reduce the footprint of this stay -- his use of solar and battery, with propane as a back up energy sources work very well. The compost toilet and outdoor shower worked impressively well. It is a nicely appointed cabin with comfortable beds and living spaces. It easily accommodated our family of 4. We appreciated the efforts connecting guests to the some of the history and culture of the area -- with some surprise treats from Carol. Delightful. The private beach and quiet location provided restful moments and wonderful star gazing opportunities. It is within an easy drive (~30 minutes) to either Hecla Island and the provincial park or to Gimli if you're looking to take in their annual Icelandic Festival. Mark's pre-check in videos are very clear and easy to follow. We appreciated his promptness in replying to any questions we had before or during our stay.
